| Tears of Joy at Kebillegama |
Women, men and children, all in Kebillegama village had tears of joy at the inauguration of their drinking water project on 30th of January. Singing and dancing followed the first release of water from the well to the hilltop storage tank, with “Seth Pirith”, ending the period of severe hardship, suffering and disappointment caused by the absence of drinking water for 224 families. The whole village had just one well down the hill. Women suffered the most, carrying water uphill. This misery was over with the new drinking water project.
Gemidiriya demonstrated the “diriya” of the people of Kebillegama who made the best use of the community driven development model with self esteem, determination, commitment and dedication to the Gemidiriya Golden Rules. The Project cost was Rs. 4,699,994.00 out of which Rs 465,138.40 was cash contribution and Rs. 930,276.80 labour contribution from the community
Many people visited Kebillegama to study how the Gemidiriya model works, to learn from the experience focusing on procurement, book keeping, community contribution, planning, self help and micro financing.
